Mekhong is Thailand’s most popular brown liquor. It began production in 1941 ; in that time there was a territorial dispute between France and Thailand about the location of a border with Laos, marked by the Mekong river, which gives its name to the alcohol. At the heart of all discussions, this dispute fueled the growing popularity of the drink. Even though it is often called Thai Whisky, Mekhong is closer to a Rum, made 95% of sugar cane and molasses, the 5% remaining being constituted of glutinous rice, but the real secret lies in the mix of herbs and spices which are added to give its distinctive taste and aroma!
